Need help with a grounded electrical socket question |
|
I just got a Kitchen Aid mixer. (Hooray!)
It has a three-pronged plug, of course. I figured I'd use an adapter. It has a really scary warning about not using adapters.
This is an old house (1950), but I think the former owner (my former landlord) installed a couple of grounded sockets. There are two with three-pronged sockets, and they have little circuit breakers in them.
Are they safe to use with my mixer?

The little circuit breakers are ground fault interruptors, which means they were installed for use around water. If water splashes into the socket or if something shorts out due to water or not, that little circuit breaker will trip immediately and shut the power off.
The mixer's housing is metal, so if you're standing barefoot in water and the mixer develops any sort of a short, you're going to get very badly zapped if it's not properly grounded.
I've got a 1952 house, myself, and a previous owner did upgrade to a breaker box and some grounded outlets. I do plug the mixer into a grounded outlet just to be safe.

2. the grounded sockets will be fine |
|
the adaptor on a two prong may cause you to trip breakers if the mixer pulls too much load.
if it doesn't trip the breaker you should be ok, it's not like you are going to walk away and leave the mixer unattended. they put those scary warnings in case you over load the circuit and cause a fire which would be highly unlikely with your mixer
have fun!

No, I'm not going to walk away while it's running.
Thank you so much! I can't wait to use my new mixer. I wish I could e-mail both of you some homemade bread.

I somehow managed to get something else done today. But I think I may have to take tomorrow afternoon off work so I can play.

I don't imagine my snakes would like it, either, but they mostly stay in their cages.

10. Actually, I should rephrase.........Kittens LEARN to dislike them...... |
|
REAL quick!
(I'm kidding....i love animals and i wouldnt let them near a power tool of any kind)
But the cat i had when i got my 5 quart mixer was FASCINATED by it in the beginning and Mr. Fred would jump up on the counter and just stare at it from about 2 feet away as soon as i started it up. The Fredster was cool. (My ex has him and i understand he still sleeps where my head did)
Enjoy your new mixer. You will go out of your way to find ways to use it. I suggest you buy a few attachments for it like the meat grinder, pasta maker, etc. I have yet to get those cause they are a lil' pricey but boy do they expand it's usefulness.
And if you havent already, you will FALL IN LOVE WITH THE DOUGH HOOK if you have ever baked bread. Kneads like there is no tomorrow!
