Patio covers

I'd love to hear your experiences with patio covers.

we're thinking of installing a 16x30' metal 'carport' behind the house with 10' of it being enclosed as a storage building. but we're on the fence..... also on tap is just an aluminum patio lean-to type structure

thoughts? suggestions??

be aware it will be on the south side of the house in a very hot climate with springs winds and storms of up to 80MPH at times mostly from the south and west but we also sometimes get up to a foot of snow in the winter :wow:

1. I had an aluminum patio cover installed on my trailer

although I didn't bother with a carport, which would have meant extending the driveway and losing garden space.

Six months after it was installed, there was the worst hail storm I've ever experienced here, some of the hailstones baseball sized. There were a few dents in the cover.

I didn't mind them but a lot of people in the park had their covers replaced. You really had to look for them to find them but I guess some folks are like that, their eyes going right to any subtle flaw and ruining the whole thing.

Just be aware that's a risk for metal covers. Fire is the risk for wooden ones, which is why the park specified metal.

Plus, metal is usually cheaper.

did they just attach it to the eave of the trailer? it stood the wind OK?

4. It was fine in wind. It was just west of Tijeras pass

and we'd get hurricane force winds howling through there pretty frequently.

They anchored it with fairly heavy bolts into a concrete pad and attached it to the trim piece right under the roof. It was a metal roof, so it was flush with the trim. The uprights were painted wrought iron, a little frilly for my taste but they did the job.

3. Funny you mention this . . . .

. . . . we were *just* talking about needing to replace the roof over our deck. It is a 30 year old fiberglass thing on an aluminum frame. The frame is very robust, the the roofing is completely sunburnt and shot.

We want to put standing seam steel roofing on it. Some one-by lathing to attach the metal and foam insulation board between the lath to dampen sound and stiffen the metal a little. We also plan to screen the deck when we do this.

6. How does it compare in cost?

I was very frustrated trying to get cost information on the internet anywhere.

but it's delicate until it's in place.

9. whatever!! I'm loving the new(er) deck though

instead of tearing the whole thing down, the under structure was sound, so we re-decked and enlarged it from 12x16 to 16x16 and are having a roof built over it for shade. we ended up ordering corrugated metal sheets that will cover the whole span

the deck looks awesome, the new steps are very cool and there will be pictures once the roof starts up...

10. What made you go with the metal?

11. the high winds out here

after i really looked at the full sheets of the ondura, i was afraid it wouldn't stand up to the harsh sun and high winds, although the local pizza joint has it on their roof and so far so good......

and since we have metal on the house, i wanted to match it up.
