There is some material(Kind of looks and feels like shredded paper, but it is something else.), to put in the bottom of the pan that begins to glow like burning embers as they heat up.
It should have came in a clear plastic bag inside the same box as the gas log fireplace kit.
Never heard of sand being used before.

They have some stuff you put in there that looks like ashes and embers. It should have come with your fireplace.
Nobody uses sand. It's not that great an insulator.
