Henry Louis Gates did a show awhile back where he took a number of famous African-American celebrities and had their DNA tested to tell them their biological roots. DNA testing is far enough along now that many ethnic groups around the world have been mapped, and certain markers have been found to give a person, say, a link to a specific tribal group in Africa, or a place in Ireland, for that matter.
in a way, this works better than a geneological chart to find one's roots.
Last night my wife said that she would like to take the test. She has done geneological research on her family, but hit the wall at the Civil War at finding public records, and much later in other parts of her family. She has two grandfathers that are mystery men, in terms of revealing their pasts, and one looked Native American with some black in him, the other looked like a slightly black Italian. She would just like to know if those theories are correct, and what else might be in the family background.
I am curious, too, as one of the white researchers in Gate's show discovered he had about 10% black ancestry. We don't know what our ancestors have been up to!
Is anyone else here curious to know?
