I am a liberal Christian...and so many people seem to think that there is no way you can be both. But then I see things written by "Christians" that are so incredibly hateful and filled with arrogance and ignorance, I can't stand it. Then they all cry and say they are being persecuted for being so, saying that they aren't hateful, just doing God's work. I have never heard anything about God wanting Christians to act the way these people do. It's so horrible. It sometimes makes me think about stating my religion, because I do not want to be lumped in with those people.

| 2. I know a lot of agnostics, and I always state my religion. |
|
I don't talk to them about it or try to preach to them, but they see how I act and realize that someone can be religious and not be like those "Christians." If they like me, they can accept the fact that I go to church and such. They respect that I'm a Christian and I respect them as well.

| 3. I rarely find it necessary to state my religion. I had a form to fill out at the hospital a couple |
|
of years ago that asked "religious concerns you'd like us to be aware of", or something to that effect - can't remember the exact wording. I decided to put down Post-Christianity. Figured that might at least give the Chaplains a clue to what I've been reading and thinking about with regards to my spirituality. Just in case I ended up "checking out" - I wanted to at least make public my vote for granting amnesty to Jesus from those who have held him captive for so long.

That's brilliant... I've never heard it put that way before!

| 6. This notion of "Christianity" has become such a messy business. And for some it has |
|
become exactly that - business. Very sad, but change is in the air!

OTOH, I dislike those who want to define who can be called Christian and who can't. (Usually the same people making you so frustrated!). OTO, I totally get what you're saying. You always feel like you need to add a disclaimer "Not like THOSE people". Sigh.
And then there's the lumping that some here enjoy doing, even though they know better. In need of a strawman to swat? Pick a Christian, treat them as if it's monolithic in belief and they're no different from Falwell, and go at it!
Yeesh.
