Hummingbirds

Here is a question: I started seeing hummingbirds in my Seattle yard early this year--I didn't write down when, but probably April. Now I continue to see them, and a friend a few neighborhoods over was saying that he was seeing them by his place, too. Some years we see none. Are they like owls and have a cycle that takes them to different areas in greater numbers over a period of several years?

I know someone north of Seattle who has a couple of resident Anna's that hang out year round. Depends on where they find the food!
