| Please help me identify a bird with little to go on. |
|
I am going by the call the bird makes and I cannot for the life of me spot which one is the one making that beautiful song. It almost sounds like a guitar riff from a Metallica song, the notes, I mean.
The first note is higher The second note is slightly lower than that Then it ends with several (about 6 or 7)short notes in a row that are lower than the second note.
The closest bird I spotted from that direction just now was a goldfinch. I like in central North Carolina (the sandhills, not the foothills) if that helps any. I have looked up goldfinch calls online and the American Goldfinch isn't the one. I will continue to look as I realize this is very little information to go on, but when I do find it, it'll officially be my favorite bird call of all time.

| 2. What's the tonal quality of the song? |
|
Is it clear and whistled, or is it a little "burry" or "squeaky?" Or any other quality? Are the last few notes evenly spaced, or do they make a "bouncing ball?" And does it sound like the bird is just singing one note, like the Chickadee song, or does it sound like the bird is whistling more than one note at any time? Finally, it isn't a White-throated Sparrow, is it? I know it's not exactly like your description, but they're sorta similar... http://www.enature.com/fieldguides/detail.asp?source=&parkid=&searchText=&allSpecies=&shapeID=0&lshapeID=0&curAbbr=&lastView=default&lastGroup=1&lastRegion=&lastFilter=4&lastShapeName=&trackType=&curRegionID=&size=&habitat=&fruit=&color=&sortBy=family&curFamilyID=208®ionSelect=All+regions®ionZIP=&curGroupID=1&lgfromWhere=&curPageNum=45
