According to a new edition of Owls of the World (Konig and Weick 2008), Tyto alba is going to be split into 9 separate species. Our North American Barn Owl will become Tyto furcata, the American Barn Owl.
The only other split of note to NA birders was the splitting of the Galapagos Short-eared Owl into its own species, but not the Caribbean or Hawaiian subspecies of A. flammeas.
So, another taxonomic change to North American avifauna.
Everyone ready to buy new field guides?
