1. Your best bet is probably |

To find a good used one. If you've used one at a gym, it's probably been one of the nice Precor ones. A used sporting goods store or fitness store might have one. You might call your local gyms too and see if they sell their equipment, though I still think it's going to be pricey.
I don't honestly think you'll find one that will compare with a gym model for your home for under a grand. However, if you're just looking for something to burn calories in the house, Tunturi makes a pretty good one, and Keys makes some decent entry-level equipment.
I took a quick check of store websites, and found the Eclipse 2100HR at Target. Looks pretty sturdy for the money.

2. I Bought One a Year Ago |
|
Spent about a grand for a NordicTrack model. Didn't work from day one. Customer service was lousy. Parts were backordered. And returning it turned out to be a real pain. The delivery guys from the store where I purchased it finally came and got it but I think it was only because they were forced to because I protested the credit card charges. And I still ended up being out the delivery fee when all was said and done.

i kinda like my gazelle. i just started using it. it has been a coat rack for a few months. but it is a good low impact workout, cheap- about $200, and small. it seems to be well made, but like i said, i have not put a lot of miles on it.
