Any spinning instructors around? |
I have been spinning for about 1 year now - usually manage to get to 4 or 5 classes a week and think it's great fun. I would like to get certified as an instructor but I'm not sure how to go about it. I have no formal training in exercise physiology or anything like that - I don't even know if I would ever want to actually teach a class, but I see this as a goal I could aspire to. Is it possible for a non-expert to do this? And how difficult is the certification session? I don't want to make a fool of myself in the process! Thanks for any advice!

2. You need to take an instructor's course |
offered by the folks who own the "Spin" trademark. I took one offered by my gym, but because of other reasons, I never finished out getting certified. :) I still spin at least 3X a week & found that class to be very helpful even though I didn't become an instructor as I wanted.

3. Did you have any other training |
in exercise physiology and stuff? Or did the course cover what you needed to know? I have medical training, so probably wouldn't be totally lost if they discussed things like cardiac output etc., but don't want to spend too much time learning about some arcane exercise stuff that I'll forget about in a couple of weeks.

4. There is some material to read |
& a test you have to take, but no phys ed requirement. You will be expected to get continuing education (so many "star points" over 2 years & every year thereafter). They are very specific on how to make sure you & the students aren't over-training & are keeping your heart rates in the proper percentages. It doesn't HURT to have that knowledge however, but not required.

Sounds reasonable. I will set my sights on getting it done in the next year or so.
