Nutrition question
Hi guys. Newb here. I stay in shape but don't eat EXTREMELY healthy. I try not to eat much junk or processed food but I like real food, meat, dairy, eggs, potatoes, etc. It's not horrible but I'm trying to be brief. I honestly don't like vegetables. One thing I do like is grains. I've brought some of the organic cerals and their good but they don't seem very dense. I like Grape Nuts but they don't have much fiber. I've been thinking of keeping some Grape Nuts at work for lunch. I also sprinkle oat bran on them to increase the fiber. What are your thoughts on that? When I was in the bulk food aisle there was other stuff that it seemed would do a good job on the colon simply from a mechanical standpoint. I don't remember what it was called but it looked like Grape Nuts only smaller, lighter and sharper edges if that makes sense. I was thinking of sprinkling that on there too. Thoughts?

1. Sounds like you do well overall

I personally use a food-based fiber supplement that I can put in my drinks during the day. I do that 2 or 3xday, depending on what else I eat.

I have to stay away from grains because they upset my GI tract, but if you like them, they are very good for you.

Why don't you like veggies? Is it the texture, taste, how they're cooked? A lot of people who say they don't like veggies have never eaten them prepared in an attractive way.

I love my veggies, munching on Brussels sprouts dressed with olive oil and sea salt as I type. :9

2. You don't like veggies. How do you feel about fruit?
For example, one apple is worth the same fiber amount as two or three servings of Grape Nuts.

How about beans? Most beans are high in fiber (example: baked beans have 8+ grams per serving).

3. Veggies
It's the texture. Really. No matter how they are cooked or anything, you have to deal with that texture and I'm just not crazy about the taste. Fruit is good but I'm single and it tends to go bad. For the sake of arguement lets say I don't eat much fruit but enjoy it. The oat bran should take care of fiber on the grape nuts, no? I like appleas but then I'm always hungry right away. This other stuff in the bulk foods, I think it was described as "steel cut" or something like that. Anyone?

4. Steel cut oats, maybe?
Yes, very high in fiber, due to much less processing. A good choice if fruit isn't really an option.

5. Maybe, thanks.
It's funny. I'm no health nut but I've got this thing about getting enough fiber to clean stuff out. My heart? Not as worried for some reason.

6. Def. steel cut oats
I may try sprinkling some of those on the GN too. It'll be fiberlicious.

7. If it's fiber you're looking for, I take this.
http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp;jsessionid=WELZDQSMDY2AGCQUC4YFAFQKCQL00UNE?id=YP-1013

Once a day, every day, without fail.

I pour a small amount of fruit juice into a shaker cup, top with about 16 ounces of water & add two heaping teaspoons of Daily Fiber Formula. Shake well, drink. If you go this route for your fiber, start with one teaspoon of fiber until you get use to it. Yerba Prima makes other excellent colon health products as well.

As for oatmeal, I use regular & top with a few teaspoons of wheat germ.
