I completely agree that election reform is crucial. But concern for it does not halt party activity.

The party is not going to shut down and give up just because Bush cheated in Ohio.

We need to focus on the actual functions of party politics. Election reform, by the way, is a LEGISLATIVE matter, not solely the domain of party functionaries. Your focus should be on your U.S. Senators and Congresspeople if that's your one-issue concern.

Isn't Zinni a Republican? (I'll admit I was getting pretty desperate for a while there and hoping Kerry would choose him as his running mate, just based on his well-founded criticism of what we've done in (to?) Iraq. Pennsylvania working class roots helped, too.)

What about some of those "Coyote Democrats" that did well in the Rockies? Too soon I guess.

As to your points on the candidates -- I am aware of those shortcomings, and agree with you that the Rovians will try to subvert just about anybody we send up.

Still, I'm not afraid. We might want to do a little speak-truth-to-power campaign. I would favor hiring some Robert Bly-style poets to give us the language we need to do battle.

In fact, it has great appeal.

Redford is much more a world citizen than he is a director or actor, and he's pretty good at directing and acting.

I would have no problem whatsoever volunteering for him and would cast my vote proudly.

Imagine a Robert Redford/William Cohen ticket. That would shock the GOP, I think. They wouldn't know how to handle it.

I'd welcome it. Newman is a fireball liberal and one of the few people who made it onto Nixon's Enemies List back in the early 70s.

I'm not hoping we have all these candidates. I'm trying to make sure I'm not overlooking possibilities.

Long before primary time, I expect our party will have maybe 8 contenders, if that.

Among those, I think John Edwards, Hillary Clinton, and Wes Clark are likely to be the frontrunners going into the Iowa Caucuses.

After that, I think it's between Clark and Edwards.

By the time the democratic ticket was decided, the candidates had already given republicans all the ammuntion they needed trying to beat each other. I'd like to see the primary candidate decided VERY early so they can have a head start on what will probably be a contentious republican primary. The republican cupboard is pretty bare for 2008, and their primary battles should be pretty ugly. I wouldn't be surprised to see the republican party split in half in 2008. Gee, what a crying shame that would be! lol
