Mayo five take on the might of Shell

Five community-minded individuals from one of the most isolated areas in Ireland find themselves behind bars today because they had the audacity to stand up to the mammoth Shell oil company.
The group was punished for refusing to give assurances that they would comply with court orders prohibiting them from obstructing work on the building of a pipeline from the Corrib gasfield through the isolated Iorras peninsula. Legitimate concerns about the safety of the pipeline and the damage it is causing to the environment have been steamrollered aside by Shell.

4. Co Mayo protestors demand men's release

From RTE:

Up to 1,000 people from north Mayo have protested in Castlebar over the ongoing detention of five men who denied Shell employees access to their lands.

It is the latest in a series of protests over the imprisonment of the men who are objecting to the laying of the high-pressure pipeline across their land.

Members of the men's families and a number of local TDs also took part in the protest.

This afternoon's rally was organised by Independent Mayo TD, Dr Jerry Cowley.
