Been getting deeper into comics |
|
the past couple of months, just bought about 30 back issues of Superman from the late 80's through 2004(bargain bin, for a buck each). I actually remembered quite a few of the storylines/art work on the comics I picked up. Going through huge bins of comics, and remembering old story lines has been a small, but pleasant joy of mine lately, its amazing how remembering these issues, brings a smile back to my face.
I left single issue comics(picking them up weekly/montly) in Jan of 1994, when my parents house caught fire and my 1500+ comics got destroyed...since then I've been a graphic novel hound. I've been trying to keep current on superman, superman/batman, and Action Comics, but I'm finding it hard to find issues. Some stores have 1 or 2, and I have to hit a circuit of 4 stores to find everything, its kind of a pain, but at least it gives me something to do.

1. Do you read any of the Vertigo titles? |
|
I don't care much for the main DC line (I'm a Marvel guy myself) but Vertigo is the pinnacle of comics today in my opinion, followed by Dark Horse and Avatar.

2. Never got into Vertigo |
|
but on the other hand I could never find them, especially when I first got into comics.
Although with Dark Horse I did read quite a few Terminator/Alien comics. With Vertigo, I see a lot of there titles(currently) and I don't know where to begin, or know if they are worth the chance. If you got recommendations, I'm all ears...

3. Any worth while Marvel titles I should start reading? |
|
I use to be an Xmen/Spiderman/Hulk guy, but I drifted from them(except Hulk). I see a lot of Capt America, Avengers titles...not sure if the current storylines are worth getting into...hell, I'm still trying to keep on top of the DC side of things(superman/batman).

4. I basically now just look at who the author is |
|
I used to read the X-titles, but they proliferated like bunnies, so I stopped for a while. I currently read Wolverine, X-men, and Astonishing X-men. The Astonishing X-men TPBs are worth picking up - the first couple volumes were written by Joss Whedon, and then Warren Ellis picked it up for a good run. Also, the stories DON'T tie into any crossovers - they all stand alone. So you can read them without having to figure out what is happening in the Avengers or a different x-title.
If Jason Aaron is writing something, I'll pick it up, because he's one of the best new writers out there right now. I heartily recommend his series, Scalped, which is among the best comic book writing and art being produced today.

Xmen was usually a decent read when I was into comics(late 80's/early 90's). The past couple of days I've been reading a lot of Marvels Civil war series....
I read:
Road to Civil War Civil War Frontline-1 Civil War-Frontline-2 Civil War Civil War-Captain America Civil War-Spiderman
They are all graphics, fwiw. I also got Civil War Punisher, and Civil War Wolverine. The series so far is pretty damn good, I liked the angle of Speedball(?) the guy who got the blame for the Stamford explosion and basically put a huge charge into the superhero registration act.
I've also read Swamp Thing Bad Seed, and Sam and Twitch:Writer.

6. I picked up the Batman Arkham Asylum comic |
|
that come out this past wednesday, its part 1 of 5(I believe). So far the comic is very top notch, and it takes place/is a filler in between the ending of Batman Arkham Asylum(the video game), and the new game coming out later this year, Batman Arkham City.
I also picked up the HC of Brightest Day vol 2, its a pretty solid story line, artwork is down right amazing....

8. Most of my haul last week was Dark Horse Mignola titles |
|
You owe it to yourself to read Hellboy and BPRD if you don't already. Some of the best storytelling in comics today.
