1. I snatched that up right away |
|
I read it in that old war comic, "G. I. Combat". It was the first comic I read that actually had main characters die - quite shocking to me as a kid.
I forgot, however, about the lettering quirk, in that the only punctuation allowed is the exclaimation point.
Still, pretty awesome.

2. I love the Sgt. Rock & Johnny Cloud cameos too... |
|
As Alan Moore said- War & Western Comics are just superhero books in drag...
HT is a great example of that- fun stuff.
I want the Jonah Hex & Teen Titans Showcase books next.

4. The Fates appoint the ghost of a Confederate General.... |
|
...to watch over a "Union" Stuart tank in WWII.
The ghost is none other than the Civil War's most brilliant calvary tactician, J.E.B. Stuart. Only his namesake, a Southerner & tank commander named after him can see or hear his image.
He basically "possesses" the tank at times, but mostly just gives cryptic advice to the living Stuart.
His crew thinks he is nuts for "talking to ghosts"- but gives him a pass since he always gets them out of scrapes...
From time to time, he complains about having to watch over "yankees"- the reader assumes it is some kind of mild punishment for being on the wrong side of the war.
In later issues, the crew even flies the confederate battle flag from their antennae to appease him.
The stories are a little dated- but killer battle scenes and great Joe Kubert art- one of the weirdest of all the war titles- lots over weird supernatural themes going on...
The best issues are the all-Star team ups with Johnny Cloud (also a supernaturally aided war character) and Sgt. Rock & Easy Co.
