Makes me wonder whether the underlying cause is to be found in the "morphic resonance" Dr. Ming was telling wee Ayuko about at the beginning. Although that seems a bit farfetched, somehow.

2. I doubt it.
The writers seem to love throwing red herrings our way, so I'm guessing that there is more to the story than that.
