Old English can be fun. Terri Curran wrote a book about Old and Middle English that's pretty good to begin with. There's another good book out there, but it went out of print in the 60s (and I can't recall the title). From there you can check out the Cambridge Old English Reader. Good luck!

| 3. Hello! this is a cool group! Here's some of mine... |
|
I'm fascinated with languages, tried to create my own when I was a little kid... I'm fluent in American Sign Language, but not in any spoken languages. I just have too many interests, too many to focus on. Languages are in that "I WISH!" category!!
I would love to learn
Old English Old Norsk German Norwegian, Dutch or Swedish (no particular preference right now) Gaelic (Scots Gaelic appeals to me for no particular reason) Mandarin Chinese Swahili Masaai Hindi Cherokee Inuit Hawaiian

| 5. I would be content with Russian, and either French or Italian |
|
Lots of other languages fascinate me, but my wishes are simple.

Just found this forum, didn't know there was one in this category:
Here are some of mine:
Hindi - It sounds so beautiful (heard in Hindi Films and from native speakers) Arabic - Same as above Icelandic - Have a penpal from there Catalan - Have friends from that area of Spain Indonesian Greek - Actually studied this a little Latin Czech
That's what I'm coming up with off the top of my head, I'm sure there are some others too.
Ones I've studied but would like to improve on:
Mandarin Chinese Spanish French German Italian

| 8. Spoken Mandarin is really simple |
|
and it's much like the telegraphic speech of toddlers. There are only 4 tones plus neutral to worry about, and no verb tenses. They have modal particles to indicate probability but aren't as obsessed with time as we are. Most compound words actually make a sort of sense.
Written Chinese is a bugger. I got to the point I could use a Chinese to English dictionary effectively, but that's it.
I could always read Italian and Spanish. I'm now working on speaking them understandably and without looking like a total blockhead.
