Wife and I are looking for a new old car; the money we have to spend is about 6000US and under. We're looking for a Ford Explorer/GMC Jimmy/Nissan Pathfider kind of deal, but I know we're going to have to look in the early/mid 90's range to get one. The car will last us hopefully about 18 months until our credit is to the point where we can get anything we want, so the idea is that we want to try one out for that time, than get a newer model in 18 months.
Anyone have any advice /experiences on the above cars?
ThankS:)

is one of the worst cars ever made. It is essentially a clone of the Chevy Blazer. The Ford Explorer is nearly as bad. The Nissan Pathfinder is by far and away the best choice of the three. However, with gas at $2.75/gallon, you should really think about whether you need an SUV?!?! Its like taking dollar bills and simply lighting them on fire... you wouldn't do that would you?

2. some people NEED a big vehicle |

with gas at $2.75, as you so rightly point out, i don't think anyone is looking at big vehicles that does not need one. i know i need mine. i am anxiously awaiting a big hybrid. i will do something i have never even wanted to do- buy new. there are penis extension vehicles, and then there are womb extensions. and then there are work horses. we do have enough penis extensions. but not everyone who drives a truck is a dick.

3. If you are looking at those, consider the Toyota 4Runner |

Much better quality and a more desirable vehicle to sell or trade in, compared with the other vehicles you listed. And have it gone over from head to toe before purchase- at a dealer or very reputable repair shop. If you live in the rust belt, buying a 10 year old vehicle means dealing with potential rust issues.

4. Seems like, for what they're looking for, the Nissan is better |

because of the lower re-sale, I'd say the Honda CRV is the best of the 'little' SUVs, but the resale is so high, buying used doesn't make sense.
