what happens if you put diesel in a regular engine?

1. It runs poorly.
Basically, it detonates rather than burns. Car rattles like crazy, smokes a lot. Stalls.

I did it once. The car was carbureted, with a manual trans. I was able to coax it home, but it was not pretty and I was not kind to it.
