I like this tutorial though. It starts with the very basics and contrasts pure HTML with CSS based solutions.

Also, look at what others have done. Find a DU journal that you like and use the View Source option in your browser. The DU journal stylesheets are embedded right in the HTML so you can easily see how someone did something you like.
