NAPANEE–A Mohawk activist's promise not to dishonour his mother by breaching bail was not enough to convince a Superior Court judge to let him out of jail.
Shawn Brant, who led an aboriginal protest that blocked a major railway and snarled traffic on Canada's busiest highway, was denied bail yesterday after a judge said there was a "substantial likelihood" he would commit further criminal acts "sooner than later."
Brant, 43, had been granted bail twice before in recent months, but breached the conditions when he took part in protests on the Canada Day weekend that blocked a CN Rail artery in eastern Ontario and delayed Highway 401 traffic, causing thousands to alter their travel plans. ~snip~
