| Native American history and culture in the New York area |
|
When I lived in the Seattle area, I found many ways and places to learn more about the Native Americans who live in the area. I moved back to NYC recently and have not been able to find good resources for learning more about the Native Americans in the area. I have gone to the National Museum of the American Indian and Museum of Natural History but would like to see more and learn more about the peoples who inhabited this area, where they lived, how they ate, etc. Can anyone make any recommendations? I hope you folks don't mind me posting this question here but I didn't know where else to go with this inquiry. Thanks.

H20 man. He lives in upstate NY, and knows a lot about the area. He also has a wealth of information as to the books to read and links to go to. I would suggest finding one of his journals, and PM him. I hope this helps ya, he's helped me in the past. I was born in the Catskill Mt.region of NY and had a Native American Ancestor from a Tribe in that area. DC

| 2. In Ny - mainly the Iroquois...... |

Oneida, Onondaga, Mohawk, Seneca and Cayuga - should be able to find books on all of them. I dunno where you are at in NY State - but if you're anywhere close to the Allegheny Rez (Salamanca, NY), you can start there....or the Oneida Territory, for starters.

I will follow up on your suggestions. In the meantime, I discovered that there will be a powwow on Long Island next week. That might also be an interesting way to learn a little about tribes in the area.

| 5. Try reading "Native New Yorkers" by Evan Pritchard |

A good book. You will have to google for it. Evan is Miq Maq, and has really done his homework on this book...
