Randi Rhodes was right today. Only Hillary can even TRY to mend these fences. |

Her speech Tuesday night was so absurd I can still hardly believe it. It was as if she was determined to play to the worst elements of her supporters, to encourage their craziness to continue. It was like red meat for them, and they ate it up. But Tuesday was exactly the WRONG time to be encouraging their craziness. Right when it had to end, she was trying to whip it up into an even worse frenzy--whether to pay her bills or what, I don't know. But it was insane and an intervention was indeed necessary.
Now, if this weekend doesn't produce a strong, powerful, beautiful message from her that ringingly endorses Obama and encourages her supporters to let go, set aside the crap and VOTE FOR HIM because of what's at stake, and put to rest once and for all the idea that she feels their voting for McCain or writing her in is just dandy, she deserves to lose her whole political career.
She must be firm, she must be inspiring, she must motivate her supporters as much in this speech as in the others. "It wouldn't hurt for you to vote for Obama, as far as I know" won't cut it.
It may break her heart, but she's gotta do it. Even if she does, the true nutballs will probably never change course. But there are surely some who could be persuaded to see what makes sense if only she would be their leader and TELL them. They might nod their heads with tears in their eyes, but they'd nod their heads.
That's what I want to see--nothing less. Because nobody can get them to change their minds but her.
