The intolerance for religion on DU is beginning to get to me again.
I made the mistake of wandering into, and posting on, a thread in which people were not only congratulating each other on how they didn't believe in any silly religious nonsense, but stating their belief that religion should be prohibited by law, in favor of "reason." Because, you know, people do all sorts of evil things in the name of religion (no shit, and they also do a lot of good things), and none of those bad things would happen if people were prohibited from having foolish and unreasonable beliefs.
I made the mistake of bringing up the First Amendment and what it said about freedom of religion.
Suffice it to say, these people don't think freedom of religion should be enshrined in the First Amendment. They want to chop that part out and do away with it. Either that, or they just didn't get what the First Amendment had to do with the eminently sensible idea that if you prohibited people by law from expressing a belief in a silly nonexistent sky-daddy, they would stop staging wars and stealing from the poor and beheading women in the name of their belief in the silly nonexistent sky-daddy.
I gave up.

| 1. There are religious bigots on DU? |

:o
:sarcasm:
It's really interesting to see where the rubber meets the road sometimes. I've long said that the only religions that are permitted on DU are atheism & paganism, because if you say anything negative about those, you're toast.

Oh, and don't forget the Flying Spaghetti Monster. And the Pink Unicorn. Both of which were, of course, expressly invented as a means of making people of any kind of faith feel like idiots and fools.
It's OK to worship Gaia, or a tree--but otherwise, can it. That's pretty much the size of it on DU.
Sometimes it amazes me how some of these people can call themselves liberals. It's like they don't even realize that forcing people not to believe in any religion is just as oppressive as forcing them to follow a particular religion.
Some people here really do make liberals look exactly like the cliche wingnuts are always accusing us of being: people who want freedom for themselves, but not for anyone who thinks differently from how they do.
