| Book to introduce Chanukah to children? |
|
I'm a Christian pastor. I'm not sure why we don't celebrate--or at least mention--Chanukah, but we don't really, even though it's mentioned in the Gospel fo John:
"22 At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, 23and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon..."
I serve a progressive congregation, where respect for other faiths is an important part of our practice. So, I'd like to teach the children of my church about Chanukah. My plan is to read them a children's book about Chanukah during the children's time in worship this Sunday. I'd like them to learn the story of the Maccabees. I've found several books on line that seem focused on Chanukah customs and traditions--latkes, dreidels, etc. I'd like them to learn about these things in time, but first I want them to know the history, how the dedication of the Temple came about.
Can you recommend any children's books for use as an introduction to Chanukah? I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
Have a Happy Chanukah!

All About Hanukkah by Judyth Groner that might help. It also has recipes and songs in it.
My favorite for little ones was Long Ago, In The Land of Yehudah: A child's history of Chanukah by Sarah Greer. It's in the 4-8 year old range and has gorgeous watercolor pictures.
One I found online but haven't seen is called Chanukah With Bina, Benny, And Chaggai Hayonah by Yaffa Ganz.
It looks fun because it is adventures with the kids and their dove that explain the holiday.

Thanks for letting me know about both of these books. I'm also thinking of doing something about Chanukah with my middle school youth group at their December meeting. The books with songs and recipes will be helpful with them.
Thanks so much!!
