Some days, I'm really angry about being diabetic. |
|
It's been 18 of my 27 years, so I don't really remember *not* being diabetic, but man. Some days, I really want to yell, and cry, and hit things. I don't want to do this anymore! I don't want to feel weak, or restricted, or like I can't just fucking not think about it or plan ahead for 2 hours out of my whole damn life. I'm wearing an insulin pump, because I get so much better control, but I HATE IT. I hate feeling *attached*... I hate always being aware of it, always worrying I'm going to bump it into something, always aware of exactly how I move/bend/stretch. I HATE IT!!! :banghead:
Thanks, as always, for listening.

2. Still, that pump comes in handy when you're on a cheat |
|
and can tap a few extra units in to compensate for it immediately. I knew a guy who was one of the first guinea pigs for one of those things and he said that was the main advantage.
In the meantime, think about not getting your legs amputated. Think about not burning out your kidneys or going blind by 35. Think about not dropping dead from heart disease before you hit forty. Put that pump you hate into perspective.
Diabetes is a rotten disease and I'm sorry you have it. However, there are much worse diseases out there. I know that doesn't make you feel any better right now, but knowing you're taking the best care of yours that you possibly can should make you feel a little bit better.
One thing I'm waiting for is a glucometer that uses light to measure serum glucose. Just getting rid of all the sticking and poking would seem to me to be one of the better things to do for diabeteics. Restrictions like following the diet become second nature after you learn them, like knowing what exercise or a case of the flu will do to your blood sugar is. Most of it is a nuisance, not a disaster.
That pump is small potatoes, kiddo, and I hope you have a very long and healthy life in which to hate it.

My daughter is nearly 20 and she's been diabetic half her life. I hate it for her and you and every Type 1 diabetic who has to deal with this devastating disease. I hate the restrictions it's placed on her life and I'm afraid for her future. I curse Bush and the repukes every day for delaying stem cell research for 8 years. I support JDRF and all those working to find a cure. Keep your chin up and know that there are lots of people working to bring an end to this disease.
