In the last 3 outings on my Raleigh, I've had to repair 2 pinch-flats.
These roads are just TOO rough for skinny tyres.

that's what i use ... you won't be quite as fast but i can even ride on dirt or gravel paths with them if the surface isn't too awful ... 28's seem like a really good compromise ...

I have a set of 35's on my Red Bike, and I LOVE 'em!

When I get up enough extra spendage for the wheels, I'm taking one bike to 650B with Col de La Vie's

Big, Fat French-styled cruising tyres....

3. You don't give up much when you go to bigger tires and you gain a lot

The weight does go up. However, that is something that ought only matter to racers. With wider tires you get lower rolling resistance, more stability, more shock absorption and a more comfortable ride.

Watch out for these tires that are specified as wider than they actually are. I bought a 700x28 IRC Durowinner 2 and it was actually 25mm wide. I am taking it back. The manufacturers play this game to get the weight specification down.

I bought some Panaracer Pasela TG 700x28 tires for my friend's bike. They worked out. They just barely fit between the brake pads when I relax open the quick-release handlebar brake adjuster, so those are as wide as I wish to go.

4. Panaracer is the best about being closest to rating.

I have some 35mm Paselas that actually are 35mm.
I have Conti Sport 1000's that are a true 1-1/4", too.

5. Coincidence

I put Conti Sport 1000 27x1-1/4 tires on my old Nashbar. I thought they were dandy. No flats as I recall. The reviewers at www.Roadbikereview.com were not so hot on them though.

I had once found a website where they published the actual widths of tires. They noted that the Pasela TG 700x28 were truly 28mm, so I bought those. The 32mm ran a little large, I recall (!). I surely wish I could find that site again. It was an online merchant, I recall. It was not nashbar or lickton's though.

9. Yes I had a flat a few weeks ago...

Damn tire decided to cut a leak, first flat I have had in years (I use 1.9 inch tires on a Cannondale with a tire liners). I wear out the tires (I tend to use slicks) before I get flat in the inner-tube.

My next bike will have 35mm 700cc wheels, these old 26 inch wheels are slowly getting to me. Not bad but 700cc can be put up to higher pressure and thus less roll Resistance AND the bikes tend to be better design for on road biking than my Cannondale 26 inch Mountain bike.

10. My next project will have 650B wheels.

I have a 27"-wheeled frame that I have put long-reach brakes on, and I'm saving my pennies for a set of Velocity 650B wheels.
I'll have room for a fatter tyre and fenders with that size.

I have 700C 35mm tyres and I like 'em. I like 'em a LOT.
