anybody have recommendations? I'm going to work part time & I can barely get 4ozs using my hand pump from the hospital, thinking maybe an electric one would do better. Any help is appreciated!

I could never get anything from the hand pump. First time I used an electric it was like turning on the kitchen tap.

3. Try the Lactina...they are pretty compact...if you check around you can |
|
probably find a place that rents them...call the OB or Nursery of your local hospital for places to obtain pumps...good luck!

4. A friend gave me hers: Ameda "Purely Yours" |
|
At my first pumping of the day, I could pump 6-7 oz, total. My second and third pumpings would be smaller.
Don't let anybody frighten you into thinking you MUST rent a hospital-grade pump, or that it's unhygenic to accept a used pump from a friend. I had a salesclerk AGHAST that I was considering using a used pump, and she read me the riot act about hepatitis and other boogeymen. She even said "What if the pump breaks and your friend wants it back, then what?". She put the fear of everything into me, but I ultimately came back around. DO NOT BE AFRAID. The "Purely Yours" is completely sanitary and hygenic, regardless of who has used it first.
I can't speak for any of the other brands, but don't let a sales clerk spook you into spending money on a new pump if you can't afford it and have access to a used one in working condition.

5. I found one at Target on sale thismorning for $89 |
|
I wish I knew someone that had a used one w/ the sanitary internal workings, but I don't. The hospital charges 2.50 a day, so I decided I might as well buy one.
thanks everyone!

I had great success with the Medela pumps. With my first child I had purchased a Playtex pump at Wal-mart and it was an absolute piece of crap. After ten to fifteen minutes of excruciating suction I had collected a total of 6 drops of milk.
I contacted a lactation consultant and she hooked me up with a medela pump (it was expensive but SOOOO worth it) and not only did it do a fantastic job of collecting, but it lasted through three my three kids, I gave it to a friend after my youngest was weaned and she used it with all three of hers. She passed it on to her sister and it finally burned out after her second child.
You might want to contact your local La Leche League too, they might be able to hook you up with a good breast pump or at least make a good recommendation for you.
