What's up with the word "meh"? |
|
I'm posting this here because I think it's usually women who have used it on some other boards (mainly, Television Without Pity.) I've never even heard of it before. Based on the context of it's use, I guess it means "whatever" or "so-so" or some other kind of non-committal response. Whatever it means, it's getting on my nerves! :silly:
I'm happy to report that I don't recall seeing anyone use it here at DU. Is this some sort of regional thing? Or am I showing my age? Thanks! :hi:

that you are right about what it means. I have seen it here but not a lot. I had no clue either (Is it our age??? G forbid!). I think you are actually a little younger than I am but still, we all need each other to interpret sometimes.

2. my bf and i "meh" each other ALL the time. |
|
in our case it means "whatever" "okay" "so - so" and many other things.
the first time we heard it was on an episode of the Simpsons. Homer asks Bart and Lisa if they want to go somewhere (i can't remember where) and the "meh" him and he asks again and they say "We SAID 'meh'."

3. I think it began as a Yiddish expression... |

Sort of the thing you'd hear your Jewish mother or bubbie say.
In the last decade or so, with so much humor (ie Seinfeld, Will & Grace, Friends, When Harry Met Sally) having characters who were very into their Jewish-ness and educating we goys, I think it's gotten very popular.
I use it myself from time to time.

All my Asian girlfriends used it all though high school. I like using it. As to its meaning, its sorta reminds be of just saying "bleh"... as something that was said, was distasteful.
Just my two cents! :hi:
