1. Congratulations, BiggJawn |

That is wonderful. I can't believe how hard it is to quit, but it DOES get easier in a relatively short amount of time.
It's been about a month and a half for me now, one day at a time, and I'm pleased to say I'm back to the point where smelling cigarette smoke grosses me out.

I think cigarette smoke smells like ass? It's no different to me now than it was when I was smoking. I'd PREFER it to start smelling like ass - to make sure no cravings ever crop up again.

4. How long have you been off the cancer sticks? |
|
And do you hang out or work with people who still smoke?

5. Been off 'em for 4 months - maybe a little longer. |
|
Nope - not around other smokers other than occasionally. I have a friend I stop and see sometimes, and HIS smokes smell like ass - same as always. They're the cheap bastards. :puke: My eyes have always burned around him.
But as for encountering cigarette smells elsewhere - as in walking by someone with a (non-cheap) smoke on the street - smells fine, pleasant even.

6. It WILL get better. Hang in there. |

I find that exercise has really helped me. After a workout, a walk, or a jog, I really can't stand to smell that garbage. I can feel my lungs just seizing up.
It may be that you have a whole lot of positive memories associated with that nasty-a$$ smell, even though your enjoyment of those times had NOTHING really to do with the smoking per se. Give it some time and those associations will go away.
And congratulations on four months off. That is just terrific. Keep going strong.

7. I still think the smoke smells good... |
|
But not the people who were smoking when they're through. Burning tobacco smells pleasant. But the ashes, smoker's breath, clothes, etc. all smell like butt. Fact, they smell WORSE than butt.

It's been a year and a half for me (I've cheated a couple of times). I wonder if the smell of a burning cig will ever not smell wonderful----you are oh so correct about stale smoke, though...
Edit to add: Michigan has a $2 tax on each pack

9. 2 years, 7 and a 1/2 months. |

Some dumbass wrote a LTTE to the campus paper last week ranting about an article that recommended Zyban as a quitting aid. "inappropriate and frivolous prescription of perfectly legal drugs" was about the most coherent line in the rant.
I think the young feller was indulging in perfectly ILLEGAL drugs, but that's just my 2 Cents...
Hang in there folks ! If you start up again, well, QUIT again!

The ranter couldn't have been a smoker. Probably never felt heaviness in his lungs.
Congratulations to you though!
Tomorrow I will wake up and I will not have a cigarette. It's time to try again. I hope I one day feel as good and healthy as you must feel. I haven't had clean lungs in 23 years. Send hopeful thoughts to those of us still clinging to the rotten things.
