| I need help with something. My stepson has worked for the federal |
|
government for around 20 years. His wife has been very sick for over 2 years and has not been able to work. They have had their house on the market for 6 to 7 months, but nothing is moving...so it looks like they are going to let it go and move to a rental.
Question: He's worried that he will lose his pension from the government if he lets his house go.
He tells me that he will lose his pension if he declares bankruptcy, but I find this hard to believe.
Anyone know where he can go to ask questions without raising eyebrows to his staff?
Thanks for help.. Didn't know this topic was here.

| 1. I've never heard of that . . .. |
|
but he should be able to find out . . . have him check with OPM and just ask in a roundabout way if there is anything at all that would disqualify him from getting his pension - including financial setbacks. OPM works up financial and retirement data for lots and lots of govt employees . .. they won't be surprised to hear his questions and he doesn't even have to give his name.

| 2. Pensions aren't lost over bankruptcy. Possibility that the bank |
|
may just take it over with his signature and he won't even have to go into bankruptcy. Even in bankruptcy, no pensions, IRA's or other retirement accounts are taken.
