How soon after someone dies are they searchable in the Social Security Death Index?

1. I found my brother..

about 4 months ago. He died last October. I got the SSN from my mother and gave it to the coroner when he filled out the death certificate.

However, I'm figuring that is not true for everyone, and sometimes the information gets passed on awhile later.

In his case, if I hadn't found out he'd died from friends who'd put me in touch with the coroner up in Colorado (we'd been estranged for awhile and all my information in his address book was outdated), he still wouldn't be there.
