that could be generated on web-sites. I received this from a family genealogy group I belong to and thought I should pass it along to everyone here. I find this really disturbing because of all the possible damage it could do to people trying to piece together their family histories. Read the article because it ticked me off that someone would do this. http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/1,1249,635160683,00.html

Mr. Harrold is asking to get kneecapped by a bunch of seriously pissed off genealogists, and I won't shed a tear when it happens.
Knowing the way newbies think, (cuz I used to be one myself), you don't understand the real work that goes into scanning hundreds and hundreds of records to find what you need. It's become much more of an "instant gratification" thing.
Evidence: all those folks who sign onto GenForum boards asking other people to look stuff up for them that is readily available in lots of places. They just don't want to work for it. They want it to be given to them so they can have the information, but don't know how to get it.
I'm lucky I have a cousin who is a certified genealogist who helped to guide me into deeper waters. But when I first started, I was picking crap up from wherever I could find it, just happy that it was mine.
I had to go back in months later, start from scratch, and not put a single fact into my tree until I entered a source quotation for it. And now that I know the satisfaction that goes into the search, I value it a LOT. Instant gratification happens once in awhile, but the hours spent in Madison poring over microfilm and finding a jewel mean so much more.
I pity the direction genealogy is going to go in now because of fuckers like this guy. What a piece of capitalist shit.
