Do Young Democratic Women Not Get the Supreme Court Thing? |
|
First off... I hope all my HRC supporting friends are hanging in here. I'm on a bit of a mental health break from D.U. at this time. Can't take the hostility anymore, to be honest. I'm only checking in once a day. But... that doesn't mean I am not working for Hillary!
I have been talking to young women around here, about the lack of young female support for HRC. I am really seeing a class divide. Young professional women seem to feel that women's rights are not an issue at all anymore. Young working class women, OTOH, (like the ones I give most of my Hillary buttons to) feel quite differently. Has anyone else noticed that?
As for me.... I feel really torn at this point. Not sure how hard I can fight to keep a Supreme Court that is friendly to women's and reproductive rights. I've already put in so many years doing that. The attitudes of so many of these young, Obama supporting, women are almost like... "why'd ya bother?" I've reached a point where I feel like telling them "You go right ahead and vote against your own interests. Let me know how that pans out for you in about a decade or so."
After all, I'm fifty. I don't use birth control any more and I won't be needing an abortion. My daughter... who it turns out is one of the young, professionally inclined, Obama supporters... may need one. But, that won't be my problem. She is an adult with resources. She can figure it out like the rest of us had to.
I hate to abandon the young working class ladies, tho. The lower income gals who get stuck with worthless men because they can't get the reproductive care they need.
I guess I am just not convinced that Mr. Obama would be all that great a champion of reproductive rights... and that assuming he could actually win. I consider it doubtful, to be honest. And... shoot... a McCain Supreme Court? Can I really tell these young Democrats to get back to me in a decade? And let me know how that went for them????
What to do?

1. Many will lose interest after the GE. Just like on American Idol. |
|
I don't believe the majority of the youngsters are going to stay involved past the GE. I feel your frustration, as well. I teach college students, and the lack of information, logic, critical evaluation, and good/evil thinking are appalling out there. But don't get too down. DU is NOT representative of the electorate, in general. And remember this:
Obama’s Popular votes: 13,964,924 (47.43%)
Hillary’s Popular votes: 13,858,725 (47.07%)
Obama’s total delegates: 1,703.0 (38.57%)
Hillary’s total delegates: 1,692.0 (38.32%)
It's only the media (via his supporters) that are presenting this as a landslide--even among the young.

3. Young women just don't get it because they haven't been jerked around enough in the work place. |
|
Sadly, their time will come.

4. If It Weren't for the Political Witch Hunts Right Now, I Wouldn't Care |
|
A Lamar Alexander / Bill Frist / CCA stooge is currently nominated for a federal bench and there's a big fight over it. This is the type of nominee we can't afford to pad his resumé at jusice's expense.
Otherwise - I'm tired of it.

5. How odd. I recently had the same discussion with someone. I don't want |
|
to ever see women lose the right to choose, but the young ones seem so apathetic. The struggles were too long ago for them to really understand.

6. I reallydon't think they get it. They equate "coolness" to "liberalness" and |
|
that's just not accurate.
Hell, Dennis Miller used to be perceived as "cool" (and by that we can also falsely infer "liberal") before he turned into a total rightwing dick!!!!

7. For the most part, young women tend to be silly and clueless |
|
I teach a class at a local university and 99% of them don't
know who Gloria Steinem is. Sad and shameful:cry:

9. I teach at a U, too--I posted just before our primary that |
|
I'd asked how many students had followed the primary election at all--reading about it on the internet, watching the news, or reading newspapers or magazines, and only 15 or so of 450 raised their hands. I asked how many had read all the candidates' websites, and no one raised their hand. After the primary, I asked how many voted.
400.
Kind of gives you the shivers, huh?
