It's that same old "passive" angle, that somehow puts the onus on the aggrieved person ..
Sorry is...
"I am sorry I/we offended YOU"...not "if you were offended"..
"If you were offended" implies that YOU may have misunderstood.
It's the same as "mistakes were made".."shit happened"..
If you are NOT sorry, don't apologize.. If you ARE, do it correctly , in a heartfelt manner.
If you are not sorry, but feel compelled to say something, just say.. "It's politics and lots of people say stupid things"..and go on.. and stop with the phony-sounding apologies.
