Obama's silence stands in the way of enfranchising Michigan

LANSING -- State lawmakers looking at a Democratic presidential primary redo in Michigan appear to be locked in a standoff heading into a crucial week: Legislative leaders say the U.S. Sen. Barack Obama camp needs to agree to the repeat election before legislation is written, and Obama supporters say they must see the bill before signing off on the plan.

But Senate Democratic Leader Mark Schauer of Battle Creek, who expected to see some bill language late Sunday or today, said legislative leaders aren't likely to spend a lot of time working out details unless they get a nod first from the Obama people.

"Now that Clinton has come out in support of the second primary, we need to hear from the Obama campaign that they're supportive; otherwise, our efforts are a waste of time," said Schauer, a Clinton supporter. "If that's the case (Obama backs the do-over), we could have serious discussions on bill language."

Matt Marsden, spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, agreed that both presidential camps need to give the go-ahead before legislators forge a bill.

3. I agree and I think the public and the party will too

If the game was played under shoddy circumstances and one team offers to replay it and the other opposes it does not make sense to penalize the initial winner who is willing to play again. The one who should be penalized is the one who is afraid to step up to the plate. Either revote (preferable) or let the original results stand. Disenfranchising any state is immoral and bad policy and especially when we are talking about a swing state that happens to be the 8th most populous state in the nation.

4. I don't think Howard Dean realizes the implications of FL/MI

If nothing is done these states will be lost to the republicans. I live in Florida and I can say it's a big deal here.

7. Howard Dean is thick with Kerry and Kennedy..

and his stalling is playing favorites within the Democratic Party itself. Howard Dean either has to do his job for the good of the party or stick with K&K and be responsible for the demise of the Democrtic Party. Howard made a bad deal when he sided with K&K, he should own up to it, at least to himself, break away and do the right thing for the good of the Party.

It's not too late for Dean, if only he'll rise up and distance himself from taking sides.

He should have just penalized the state but stripping it completely was idiotic. His 50 state strategy idea is great but he has been horrible on the FL/MI fiasco.

That just doesn't make sense. They should just go ahead with it anyway. What about all the voters in Michigan? Don't their wishes count anymore?
