Having Second Thoughts About a Major in English
I’m just beating myself up.
You deserve to be beaten! What made you think you could handle this? You’re no artist. You’re no creator. You’re just some dumb trucker. So c’mon now, fucker! Show us what you got! Deep down inside you know you cannot hide. It’s all going to come out about your miniscule imagination. Now you think you can get by as long as you really try. Wrong again dumb trucker! Full time steering wheel holder is all you’ll ever amount to. But you’ve got to try and make a change. Well, we’ll see about that. Foolish.
This is the first poem that I wrote for my poetry class. I was back in college again after seven years of being a trucker. This is a repost of the the same poem I had earlier on here. This time without the crazy characters for apostrophes.

| 2. I didn't think your poem was sappy |

I thought it was really good. You ought to check out a few poetry publications and submit it. When I was in college the English department would publish a quarterly magazine with all kinds of poems and short stories in it. You didn't have to be a student to submit your work. Maybe you have something like that in your area.

and think about it. Your poem really touched me. I too am just a cog in the wheel, one of the grunts. Although I enjoy poetry, in no way, shape or form could I write it.
Well, maybe one day.

You just paid me the highest compliment that I think you can give a poet. It made you think. It made you feel.
Anyone can write a poem, man. I've had a person tell me that one of my poems was not really poetry because it didn't live up to their standards. To hell with that. Have you read any Charles Bukowski? There was a working man's poet if I ever saw one. Bukowski never graduated from college but he went on to become a great contemporary writer.

| 6. Bukowski is an inspiration |
|
He rebelled against the institutionalized sect of poetry and showed that you don't need to fit a certain mold to be considered a "good" poet, but rather just have to speak true to what's in your soul.

| 10. the trouble with "standards" is that one can never "live up" to everyone's |

standards -- you just have to be yourself. Too many people try to make the poem conform into something it's not -- to make themselves conform into something they aren't.
