Anyone here go to Curves? |
|
I'm a little embarrassed posting on the "exercise and fitness" boards. There's a long road between where I am and "fit," but I'm working out three times a week.

2. And sometimes they play contemporary Christian music. |
|
:puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:
I did at one time cancel my membership because of their politics and then decided that I was cutting off my nose to spite my face. It's a cheap and easy workout right across the street from my place of employment.
I pay them for the service they provide. I have my bumpersticker-covered car in their parking lot and I use my pentacle necklace as a "marker" (inside or outside the shirt) for me to keep track of how many times I go around on the equipment. This morning I heard the "praise" music and wanted to suggest they replace it with Inkubus Sukkubus, but why bother?

3. Aside from the music, do they try to force anything on you? My wife |
|
was considering going to one in Nevada, but was told that they had prayers and other religious trappings going on.

4. There's nothing like that at the Curves where I go. |
|
They have a magazine that is definitely of a Christian bent, which they used to sell but now give away to their members. They're not pushy at all, and I am not sure where the people who work there (or even the owners or managers of this particular Curves, for that matter) stand politically or spiritually.
Usually the music is old rock and disco; I've only heard the contemporary Christian stuff once.

5. Even if you don't mind suporting extremist right wing causes, |
|
their workout program is designed for overweight, out of shape housewives who have NEVER exercised and need/want someone to tell them exactly what to do. Since you're currently exercising 3 times a week, I seriously doubt if you'd be satisfied with a beginner's program like Curves.

6. Curves can be good, but............. get thee to the weight room! |
|
You might be better off joining a more traditional gym if you want serious results.
I don't personally think that Curves offers what a lot of struggling people really need--results. They might offer programs that are easy to stick to and support, but you can find those anywhere. There seems to be a lot of emphasis on cardio at Curves (but I have never been there, just second-hand info, so this is just my opinion as an outside observer).
The #1 thing that people who are trying to get fit need to know is that building muscle is the most important thing you need to do. Cardio doesn't cut it. Muscle burns fat--so get thee to the weight room and jog around your neighborhood or hop on the elliptical machine at the gym for your cardio. Better yet--TaeBo--I love TaeBo.

7. I did Curves a few years ago |
|
and didn't like the workout. IMO, the best exercise I can do is yoga a few times a week and weights the other days.

8. I go to a place called Sea Sizing in the Keys. It is very similar |
|
to Curves, but without the proselytizing. And since we do have a Curves in town, all the democrats go to this place, so there are plenty of political chats to join into. :)
I don't go for weight loss, actually, because I rely on my diet for that, so any additional loss I get from this is gravy, I figure. But when I went religiously last year for eight months, I really did get nicely firmed and toned (as opposed to the sack of jiggly chicken fat that I usually am when I'm not doing anything physical).

9. I love the Curves workout. |
|
I've been going there for over 2 yrs. You get cardio and weight training in a half-hour workout with stretching at the end. I feel better when I do the workout and I've meet some really nice people.
Everyone needs something different in a gym. I've tried the traditional gyms and hated them. You either have to workout with the men or I'd pay extra for other 'women only' gyms and for services that I never used. Also with Curves you just jump in to the workout and get started, you don't have to work your schedule around being there when a particular fitness class starts.
