Swiped from LBN: American Girls' Suicide Rates Jump |

Warning: this discussion has it all--false accusations of anti-male sexism on the part of the media/statisticians, pro-gun nastiness and even swipes at psychiatric medication. It's also about yet another horrible trend in our society. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=102&topic_id=2980285&mesg_id=2980285

2. So they bemoan the focus on girls' suicides |
|
Because 4 times as many boys commit suicide. For that reason, boys should be the priority. Okay fine. I wish they'd be consistent about that when the subject is rape, which predominantly affects women at the same (or higher) ratio. But no, some of these same folks will get all "Men get raped too, you know! What about the menz!" on you when that topic comes up.

3. The double standard strikes again. |

Yes, more boys commit suicide, but any spike for any reason requires urgent attention. I can't believe anyone with a concience would overlook that.
And if they are so obscessed with only looking at the largest concentration of suicides, then you are absolutely right that it would be nice if they viewed other issues the same way. No more using "but men get raped too" as an excuse for ignoring rape.
I would not be upset about the "but men get raped too" defense if it meant that people were really paying attention to rape and sexual abuse as a serious issue. Tackle it from whatever direction you want, just tackle it. But that never seems to be the case.
It's pure rationalization to justify a total lack of concern.

4. And why am I bothering to argue with a gun nut? |
|
x(
Geez. I support the right to own guns. I think there is a valid need to have armed citizens. But I think guns need to be registered and controlled, and we need to face up to the dangers and problems that come with an armed citizenry. That said, I can't stand rabid gun freaks.
