Cellulite is supposed to be my "worst nightmare?!" |
|
As I'm in line at the grocery store I read the covers of the magazines. One of the main stories today is some celebrity diet to eliminate cellulite- "every woman's worst nightmare." Huh? I'd say my worst nightmare would be something like loss of job and health insurance, especially while having serious health problems, and for my children if I had them, being homeless because of it, etc. Did I miss a memo?
I guess this is just a rant, I always roll my eyes at those kinds of magazines but cellulite as a "worst nightmare" seemed worse than usual. It's not like media messages that our looks are the most important thing for women is new.

1. That's so funny, I saw the exact same magazine in line at the supermarket last night |
|
I was like "Whah?!?" A woman came up behind me and was looking at it and shaking her head. I sensed a kindred spirit so I made a comment about how I could think of nightmares far worse than cellulite. She said, "Yeah, like my mom being terminally ill right now." Really puts it even further in perspective, doesn't it?
Yeah, that headline seemed worse than usual. I generally don't even notice the rags at the checkout line but that stood out at me, and the woman who joined me. I guess it's because it seems that the media usually tries to pretend that a woman's looks aren't the most important thing about her, even though that's the implicit message in everything they do. That headline wasn't disguising it at all.

2. I would actually welcome cellulite as my worse nightmare. It could replace |
|
the many real problems of my life. I would learn to live with it and then go on my merry way, even with jiggly thighs.

3. I would much rather cellulite was the biggest thing |
|
I had to worry about, yeah. Instead of my dad's cancer.
But we gotta reinforce those stereotypes of women as hypersensitive, irrational, and insecure. Otherwise, how will they continue to sell us crap we don't need and can't afford in those same magazines?

4. I saw that the other day. You know what's funny? "Cellulite" has only |
|
existed in the public consciousness since like the 60s or 70s. Before that, it was just your freaking body.
Guess what, I've got way more important things to worry about.

7. A men's magazine like that |

would make for a nice bit of culture jamming.

8. It's pretty high up on the list for the trophy wife |
|
I think it might be tied with stretch marks.

9. A perfect example of why I hate most women's magazines. |
|
They're superficial, heterocentric, sexist, and they just plain piss me off.
Although - I have a friend who used to write the sex columns for one of said magazines, which suprised me because a) she's very bisexual, and it was one of those super-heterosexual magazines and b) she's a big feminist, and that magazine was pretty non-feminist. I'm guessing she just had to pay the bills - or something?
