BlueIris's poetry always moves me, sometimes frightens me with some of the intensity and truth it contains.
I'm not a big Nickleback fan, but I heard enough of this song to look up the lyrics. Not very sophisticated perhaps, but neither is intimate partner violence
"Never Again"
He's drunk again, it's time to fight She must have done something wrong tonight The living room becomes a boxing ring It's time to run when you see him Clenching his hands She's just a woman Never Again
I hear her scream, from down the hall Amazing she can even talk at all She cries to me, Go back to bed I'm terrified that she'll wind up Dead in his hands, She's just a woman Never Again
Been there before, but not like this Seen it before, but not like this Never before have I ever Seen it this bad She's just a woman Never Again
Just tell the nurse, you slipped and fell It starts to sting as it starts to swell She looks at you, she wants the truth It's right out there in the waiting room With those hands Lookin just as sweet as he can Never Again
Seen it before, but not like this Been there before, but not like this Never before have I ever Seen it this bad She's just a woman Never Again
Father's a name you haven't earned yet You're just a child with a temper Haven't you heard "Don't hit a lady"? Kickin' your ass would be a pleasure
He's drunk again, it's time to fight Same old shit, just on a different night She grabs the gun, she's had enough Tonight she'll find out how fucking Tough is this man Pulls the trigger as fast as she can Never Again
Seen it before, but not like this Been there before, but not like this Never before have I ever Seen it this bad She's just a woman Never Again

1. It's good that lyrics like this are in the mainstream. |
|
I wish more of the popular bands would have messages in their lyrics. So many songs out there just seem generic and don't really say anything.

Similar theme. I'm not much of a nickelback fan (although the song you posted is cool), but god, I love Kathleen Edwards
IN STATE ~ Kathleen Edwards
I can spot your kind a million miles away Buckle down boots and a bloodshot gaze You talk so sweet until the going gets tough The last job you pulled was never big enough
Don't say you'll change after the next time You wouldn't even be yourself if you weren't telling a lie
Cuz I know where the cops hang out I know where you'll be found I know what you're all about I know when you're going down
You only call me honey when we're alone Hiding at your place up on slack road You've got an answer for every little thing You can't even tell me where you've been
My face couldn't make you leave it behind Maybe 20 years in state will change your mind
Cuz I know where the cops hang out I know where you'll be found I know what you're all about I know when you're going down
Don't say you'll change after the next time You wouldn't even be yourself if you weren't telling a lie Maybe 20 years in state will change your mind
Cuz I know where the cops hang out I know where you'll be found I know what you're all about I know you'll never change now
I know my love was good enough I know you would have shed my blood I know you can't shut me up I know when you're going down
I've heard two different interpretations of this song:
1. Woman is emotionally mistreated/cheated on by her partner, who is also into illegal things. She threatens to report him to the cops for the various illegal things he has done. 2. Woman is physically battered by her partner, reports him to the police.

4. Oh, that song brings back memories |
|
I did like (ahem) We'll call them underground types. Many years ago. I have never been a woman who tolerated physical abuse, however. I agree with your assessment, I think the song could and probably does apply to both scenarios.
I once did a little volunteer work for women in prison. A very common theme was the women who committed crimes either with their male partner, or for their male partner. They usually didn't talk about blaming their partners, but I found it interesting that so many of these women seemed to get pulled into crime, often really stupid crimes-- like check fraud, or petty ass drug dealing. (Poor return for the crime)-- almost as followers. Even the harder, street wise ones. Childhood abuse and/or intimate partner abuse was a very common experience. The truly violent women I didn't work with, although I know at least one in prison still on a triple felony. That song reminds me of those women, they know they system, they're part of it, and often have no idea how to get out.

...are frequently the punchline to jokes about bands that suck.
I'll be honest, the few songs I've heard by them--make me want to pull out all of my hair by the roots, while running from the room screaming. I'm not talking about their lyrics, I couldn't tell you any of their lyrics to be honest. I can't get past the way the band "sounds." The lead singer's voice annoys me to no end.
I sincerely hope that others can get past the superficial, and pay attention to these lyrics.

5. My daughter says they've gotten better |
|
She used to despise everything they did. I agree that lead singer's voice grates on the nerves, but they have another song out that just cracks me up, something about being a rock star. It's got this line "We'll all stay skinny 'cause we just won't eat"
Where I heard that song was on XM radio-- Kind of a side note, the stations geared toward the young male demographic are absolutely filled with awful sexist side comments. I've noticed that on regular radio as well, it seems worse actually on regular radio. And I'm NOT talking about hip-hop-- hard alternative or metal can excel mainstream hip hop for outright misogyny, yet what your hear about when sexism in music is brought up is, of course, rap or hip-hop.

It cracks me up, that I'm not the only one annoyed by that singer's voice. I appreciate your daughter's review. On her review, I'll give them a listen next time I'm at the music or bookstore. :hi:
