Has anyone here seen the documentary "Girl 27"?
Edited on Tue Mar-23-10 08:47 PM by BlueIris
It's about the 1937 rape of Patricia Douglas, an extra with MGM studios, by an MGM executive, and the massive, state wide cover up to conceal the crime. I watched it last night and was totally bowled over.

It's a horrifying story. The documentary, which I think could have been about an hour longer, delves into not just the societal aversion to discussing rape, other sex crimes and sex, but the enormous pile of power movie studios had over just about everything back then, and the ways in which they chose to abuse that power.

The film is also a moving account of the relationship which evolved between documentarian David Stenn and Patricia Douglas. Douglas suffered severe emotional trauma as the result of her ordeal, and was basically a total recluse until Stenn found her and drew her out. Their reminiscence of the friendship is really adorable--Stenn went so far as to go to Douglas's apartment every day for months and do things like clean her toilets in order to gain her trust--it's like a whole other movie in itself.

Sadly, the Wiki article on this piece is just a stub:

I may have to fix that.

Please try to see it if you can; it's excellent.

...definitely want to check it out, and thank you for sharing about it! :hi: i love features like this.
speaking of the hollywood system of days gone by, have you seen this one, entitled Complicated Women?

http://www.tcm.com/thismonth/article.jsp?cid=25794&mainArticleId=149209
profile on Turner Classic Movies

It's about the best years for women in Hollywood films (the pre-Code era)from 1929-1934. It goes on to feature clips from
various films that show the variety of ways women were allowed to be portrayed and represented in films of that period
(i.e. strong, in charge, single, taking lovers w/out getting married, having careers, sexual, amoral, etc., etc.).

not sure if this link is still functional, but i found this. apparently it was linked from here to youtube.com:

http://www.sfchron.com/cgi-bin/blogs/mlasalle/detail?blogid=38&entry_id=56337

The book by Mick LaSalle that the documentary is based on (consequently the same person who provided the link above):

http://www.amazon.com/Complicated-Women-Power-Pre-Code-Hollywood/dp/0312284314

The book w/excerpts:

i'm considering signing up for netflix or something like that, so i have access to more films like the one you mentioned. the local video stores used to carry more (i.e. documentaries, foreign films, etc.) not so much anymore. :(

8. I can't vouch for this link, but
it appears you can watch the movie for free here:

http://www.snagfilms.com/films/title/girl_27/

I clicked on it and a player that looks like youtube came up and started playing.

You might want to look into what "snagfilms" is first just to be safe.
