Target boycotted for donating $150,000 to MN right-wing Republican Tom Emmer's campaign for governor

Mega-retailer Target has found itself in the bullseye of a customer uprising.

In the wake of the company's decision to donate $150,000 to a right-wing conservative's political campaign, former Target shoppers across the country are calling for a nation-wide boycott.

And the movement to protest the super-saver store is gaining buzz – and traction – on Facebook and Twitter, as a petition threatening a boycott of Target rebounds across the Internet.

The company’s support of Emmer has drawn a firestorm of controversy for the candidate’s hard-line conservative views – he opposes same-sex marriage and abortion, and supports Arizona's efforts to pass the controversial S.B. 1070 immigration bill.

When news of Target's donation broke, Democratic political action organization MoveOn.org began to organize a national boycott against the store, creating a petition on its website that screamed, “Target, stop trying to buy elections!"

1. Well I haven't been since this came out
Target is a choice of connivance. When I want a REAL bargain, I go to Goodwill or something, so it won't be a hardship to not go and write a letter or send an email why.

2. I'm going to post later...
...an article I found about this situation. In it, they detail that targe has always had rather friendly policies for glbt's in their employment (which is not easy to come by these days, it seems). So I'm a bit torn.

At the same time, I agree w/the reasons the boycott was put in action. The idea that the money I spend there, was supporting that guy, makes me ill.

3. Except for using gift cards I've been given I haven't shopped there in years.
Funny how they hide between the 1964 Civil Rights Act while admitting other drugs can conflict with religious beliefs but this is the only drug their pharmacists can refuse to fill.

Target Pharmacists Can Refuse 'Plan B' Prescriptions

November 18, 2005

Independent companies are now joining the political fray over the emergency contraception medication known as Plan B. The Target retail chain now allows pharmacists at its stores to refuse to fill Plan B prescriptions, saying they are respecting the religious beliefs of its employees under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
.....
BRAND: But that's not the only drug the conflicts with people's religious beliefs.

Ms. MICHAUD: Possibly not, but this is the one that we've kind of carved out, and I'm not going to go into the detail behind the decision-making process around this, but I can simply confirm that this only applies to Plan B, and that we will still ensure that every Plan B prescription that comes to our store does get filled, even if in rare instances it's by a different pharmacy.

4. Thanks for the reminder of this...
...yet another reason to boycott.:grr:
I couldn't recall if Target was part of that. I could only recall Walmart.

5. If Target is giving $$$
to Republicans, I'm not shopping there. I just use them to recycle my glass and aluminum cans. And I make a lot of noise with the glass!

7. The Target near my
house is so quiet...no music. So when I crash those bottles, it really echoes through the building.

I even wrote the CEO and told him that by giving $$$ to the republicans, he is cutting off his nose to spite his face.

And Target won't sell wine/beer on Sundays for some odd reason....too puritanical/hypocritical for me.

I find their food prices to be high so it's easy for me to not shop there. I have some local stores that are very competitive and the money stays here.

:hi:
