Young girls deserve an "It gets better" campaign.

But that would be a lie, wouldn't it?

It doesn't magically get better for women, just because you grow up and stop being around kids who can be such jerks.

It only gets better if you numb yourself. Try to stop noticing all the ways that society keeps trying to force you into a little box marked 'other'. Try to stop noticing all the ways that so many women buy into the patriarchy, and even ape it for male attention for approval. Try to stop noticing all the ways that society sets us up to compete with each other... and for what? Male approval.

Yeah, we deserve this campaign. But first, it has to be true.

We have to start speaking out against the constant myriad reminders of society's sexist and misogynist conditioning, and not just sighing and trying to ignore it.

Ignoring it is not helping. Ignoring it is enabling people to make things worse.

...I don't think I could look at a young girl and say, "It'll get better" with a straight face. Or without crying.

I do think it is slowly improving as new generations and their attitudes replace the previous one. When I was working on my bachelor's degree in history in the 1980s, the department at my school was almost entirely white and it was entirely male. No one discussed feminism and they only mentioned postmodernism to deride it. Now, I've gone back for my master's and the department is about half female and feminism is understood to be a serious topic of study.
