http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3964738Both the Supreme Court ruling and the attitude of some DUers that women shouldn't expect the police to come when their ex violates a restraining order. :scared:

1. Some of the comments blame the woman |
|
For her ex killing her kids "She should have done this. She should have done that..." Oh, and I just love the smug ones with their that-would-never-happen-to-me attitude. Also the ones talking about buying a gun and the right to bear arms. How precisely would that have saved this woman's kids considering they weren't with her at the time her husband killed them?

2. That thread bothered me a lot too. |
|
The states will have to decide this issue ... but the fact that this case made its way all the way to the SCOTUS makes me suspect that her state authorities told her to get lost. :(

3. Are you guys ALERTING on sexist responses? |
|
If you don't, how will the mods every know? They cannot read every response in every thread. They're not on duty 24/7. They may not immediately "get it" about why a particular comment is sexist/misogynist or not. I alert on sexist posts I find and try to explain, best I can in the moment, what's wrong with them.
It's great to bring threads here, but if you're not ALERTING on posts, then -- well, just sit back and take some more, I guess.

4. Just for the official record, I always alert on any sexist post I read. |
|

It's my new official policy not to put comments in the comments section of an alert form, though, lest I give in to criticize anyone, anyone at all, including oh, say, the administrators. I'm not sure if my alerts are helping or not but I will continue to alert. Still, I've seen no evidence that sexist posts in and of themselves, will be deleted. Blatant, over misogyny, maybe, but "plain, old" sexism? Not always. Make of that what you will.

5. Hardly any sexist posts are ever deleted. |
|
I've given up alerting on most of them.

7. I didn't alert on this particular one, but perhaps I should have. |
|
I didn't think the main problem with the thread was sexism, but the attitude that none of us should expect the police to respond just because a crime has been committed. There is legal precedent for that ruling, but it still feels wrong to me nonetheless.

8. I was disturbed by both... |
|
the attitude that people shouldn't expect the police to protect them and the rampant sexism as some people actually tried to blame the mother in question.
I don't think I alerted on any specific posts in that thread...wasone of those situations where I wanted everyone to see how some of our fellow DUers actually think.

9. Yes, the "blame the victim" mentality seems to be rampant everywhere. |
|
Maybe it makes people feel safer to criticize the victims of crime, but it's counterproductive and cruel.

If you don't know her story, you need to http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/vaw00/thurmanexcerpt.htmlThe thread in GD reminded me of her ordeal. I also wondered how many of them would voice outrage over Thurman...
