OK, this thread sank in GD:Politics |

Hope it does a little better here! Jen Sorensen is a great cartoonist who makes some very good points in her blog about why we should be very concerned about John Roberts' views on women. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=2027139&mesg_id=2027139

1. We should be very concerned |
|
There seems to be very little "fight" against him. Judging by his comments, he's misogynist, racist asshole. He appears to have neither the experience, nor the temperament to sit on our highest court, no matter what his political affiliation. But many folks are generally sitting quietly doing that "best we can expect" attitude.

He's an asshole. And a lot of people, including DUers I'm sorry to say, think he's 'reasonable'. I guess it's because he hasn't actually burned a woman at the stake yet. That must be what it takes for some people to perceive a threat to women's rights. :grr:

3. I think it's more of a question of-- |
|
--expecting Bush to come up with someone even worse if we can manage to get Roberts rejected. I want every Dem to fight every last one of them, but I also expect that we are going to lose. And the people who are less incensed about Roberts probably think that however bad he is, alternatives are bound to be worse.

4. That's so wrongheaded IMO |
|
Of course any nominee the Chimp produces is going to be unacceptable to us. And we need to shout from the rooftops that this is so, not just throw up our hands in surrender and say "Oh well...it could be worse". Roberts is a fascist, corporatist, sexist fuckwit.
Contrast that reaction with that of the wingnuts who screamed "Quota Queen" and other such invectives about Clinton nominees all over the media. Ginsberg and Breyer were eventually confirmed but factions of the Right still act like they are the personification of far left judicial activism.

5. Most of the people I have seen who are "less incensed" about Roberts |
|
are men. White men. No wonder they don't care.
As much as I think this guy is a horror show waiting to happen for women in this country, I fear his all pro-corporate stance even more and can't understand why the "white guys" supporting him don't get that part. They think they're "only" sacrificing "special interests" but I'm pretty sure with his pro-corporate track record, they're sacrificing their own interests as well. I have tried to make this the point of my discussions with anyone who uses the "it'll be ok little girl" approach with me.

8. at the risk of sounding PollyAnna-ish, I'm waiting until the hearings |

start. I think Leahy and Kennedy are keeping their cards close to the vest right now because there is no reason at all for them to do otherwise.
Let's see what Roberts gets asked and how he answers. People will pay a lot more attention then vs. now.
Honestly, my first reaction when I saw him (having heard nothing about his record at that point because I was visiting family out of town) was that he had the wild-eyed look of a sexist RW wingnutcase. Since that time the info seems to confirm that.

I believe he'll eventually get confirmed, but I don't believe there won't be a fight. But with the short term attention problems of the American public, they can't start the fight too early, or folk will get "bored" and start watching survivor reruns, instead of paying attention to the things that really matter.
