2 depressing things today...
1. I came upon this today - I knew this - but I forgot...

Civil Rights Act of 1964

"The Civil Rights Act of 1964 (CRA '64) in the United States was landmark legislation. The original purpose of the Bill was to protect black men from job (and other) discrimination, but at the last minute in an attempt to kill the bill, it was expanded to include protection for women. As a result it formed a political impetus for feminism."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civil_Rights_Act_of_1964

Just the idea that after all that - what Rosa Parks and what so many women went through and tolerated - that politicians would have tried to write the civil rights law to exclude women. It's outrageous. And that the expansion was supposed to be a way to KILL the bill...

2. Watching "Human Trafficking". I knew it would be depressing and I watched it anyway. I am angry at anyone who feeds that beast. The ones responsible, of course, and also people who patronize child prostitutes and sex slaves and people who enjoy :eyes: "rape porn" and "child porn" in any form.

2. You're right - very depressing.
and there are so few men who are genuinely opposed to these things - even here on DU which is REALLY depressing. Men's hatred for women seems to know no bounds, and when women speak up about it we get accused of "man-bashing" or being "man-haters".

Do they call minorities speaking up about racism "white bashers"? I've never heard anyone use that term on this board.

What is really upsetting is what you said in #2 "people who enjoy :eyes: "rape porn" and "child porn" in any form. I really can't understand getting off on the pain and suffering of others. It's sick.

3. A bit of historical perspective
The 1964 Civil Rights Act was never going to pass when it was first proposed. The assassination of JFK in 1963 gave Lyndon Johnson the sympathy vote in Congress, and that's the only reason it passed. Before Kennedy was murdered, it was dead in the water, some pie-in-the-sky legislation that was never going to become law.

In fact, the women's movement really owes very little to that Act, which was hardly aimed at anything having to do with women, but was primarily a racial equality matter.

The appearance of the birth control pill in the early sixties was when things started to change for women. That was true liberation, and that was where it all started. The halls of Congress were not involved.
