The Dark Underside to Nanny McPhee |
|
I went to see this movie with my kids because there are very few children's movies out and they saw the commercials and were interested.
Basically a fairy tale about a widowed father who is being forced by the "mean old aunt" to marry in order to give his brood a mother...all ends well and he marries the maid.
The problem is this...the father is a widow because due to the lack of birth control...his wife wore out from bearing one child after another until the birth of the last baby killed her. ....so what is the answer...of course to marry him off...but not a woman his own age or perhaps out of childbearing range...nope...cuz those women in the movie are portrayed in an awful light...
nope...he is married off to the maid who is more than likely half his age so he can bugger her into the grave too with endless childbearing...
on the surface a sweet tale...on the sub surface a tale of what life was like before women gained access to birth control...

I read somewhere that that was the subtext of the Bluebeard story--that Bluebeard killed his wives by getting them pregnant.
