"Boys and Chicks"
On the march route for the NY peace march we saw a store that sells children's clothing. The name of the Store was "Boys and Chicks."

I had to stop and point this out to people. That just seems to me to be an offensive name. Other people didn't agree. What are you thoughts? Is this worth commenting on or not?

1. Some people just don't get it
While it's not outright offensive, it's rather demeaning. It certainly isn't taking the female patrons seriously in any way.

Or Chicks and Pricks if you want to be offensive. :P

3. It's stupid as well as offensive
Notice though, even through the stupidity, the male gets a gender and the female is not human. You can pick through the haystack of straws in our language with things like this, things that are dismissed as no big deal, but they do reflect the larger problem of institutional sexism. Sexism always harms. Thank you for pointing it out, because even the people that don't agree, are at least aware of it. It's a horrible name for a shop for children's clothes. I wonder if they would even get away with it with teenage girls? Or Young women?

By the way, I would have given teeth to be in that march and thank you so much for being there!

4. That is what I thought.
If I had kids my son would be a person but my daughter would be a "chick." I'm not sure I'd shop there for a girl.

I wish you could have joined us too. It would have been awesome to have a larger groups and meet you.

5. I definitely would not shop there
for either sex. And their dehumanization of girls is child abuse.

6. Sure
I probably wouldn't be offended, but it's definitely worth commenting on. The language is objectifying towards females - girls aren't referred to as human beings, but "chicks." Also, it's a little odd that that term is used for a children's store. People usually say "chicks" in reference to young women. The fact that girls are already being trained to think of themselves as "chicks" is a little disturbing. It's sort of a little thing that points to a larger problem.

7. I can just imagine the furor
if a kids' store had the girls' section called Sugar and Spice and the boys' section called Snips and Snails...then people would get all pissy about calling their precious boychildren a non-human name. But it's par for the course for girls. Get used to being dehumanized and objectified early, "chicks."

8. I think it's offensive too.

Some time ago, I started a thread on GD about women being called "girls."
Even women who are decidedly middle-aged.

That sort of ahh---terminology seems to crop up more in the workplace or in speaking of working women than outside of the workplace.

Yes, the "boys and chicks" is worth commenting on.
