Nonfeminist progressives? |
|
I was astounded in other threads to find that there was actually a question of whether a person could be a progressive without being a feminist.
Sure, if they think women are already equal. But to think that they'd have to be seriously ignorant and unaware, and that's not descriptive of progressives.
Sure, if the welfare of half the world doesn't matter to them--again not descriptive of progressives.
My little pocket dictionary says progressive means "receptive to fresh ideas or concepts."
No, you can't be happy with the status quo, or wish to return to earlier times, and call yourself a progressive.

2. No society which has oppressed half its people |
|
has ever done much in the way of progress. Oh, a few rich dabblers might figure a few things out, but it's basically a stagnant society.
Consider that the golden age of Islam occurred when women were the most free, before the tribalist nonsense of the Hadith took over.
Consider that the golden age of Christian nations is now, when women are the most free. It looks like the oppressors are getting restive, though, so the ride may be over.
There is no way to be a progressive yet approve of the enslavement of the female half of the human race. It simply can't be done.

3. I think it is very disconcerting... |
|
however, the term "feminist" is so muddled today. As many others mention, very similar to the word "liberal."
I disagree with some that want to post baiting posts to "call out" the nonfeminists. I think the "You may be a feminist if..." is a better way to educate rather than depend on an individual's definition which leads to silly flames that have nothing to do with equality but side issues.

4. I don't think you can be truly progressive if you are a sexist |
|
anymore than I think you can be truly progressive if you're a racist or a homophobe. Sorry, but human rights means the SAME rights for all humans and is not conditional on the presence or absence of a penis.

That is why so many feminists call themselves humanists these days.

6. scratch a racist, find a sexist |
|
I also think if you scratch a sexist you'll find a racist
You can't be a progressive and be a sexist.
It's. Not. Possible.
